ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY SENIOR CENTER
The Athens-Clarke County Senior Center at the Athens Community Council on Aging is a multi-purpose center dedicated to offering a variety of opportunities for older adults of the Athens area to participate actively in unique social, cultural, educational, and health-related services and programs.
General Information
The Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm.
A variety of activities, classes, programs, and services are provided to older adults by the Senior Center on an ongoing basis. These include but are not limited to the following:
Classes
Yoga - class is held Wednesdays from 3:00 - 4:15 pm and on Fridays from 10:00 - 11:15 am. Space is limited. Please call for availability. Free
Tai Chi - class is held on Tuesdays from 2:00 - 3:30 pm. One time fee of $15
Pilates - class is held on Mondays from 2:00 - 3:30 pm. $20 per 10 classes
55 Alive - this defensive driving class is taught by AARP volunteers and is held 2-3 times per year. Dates and times will vary. Successful completion will result in discounted automobile insurance. $10
Computer Class /Lab - Class time, schedule, and availability vary. Please call for updated information. Computer Lab open Monday-Friday from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.
Groups
Conversational French Group - This group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month at 2:00 pm to converse in French on various topics and current events. Free.
Memory Painters Art Group - This group meets each Tuesday at 2:00 pm to share ideas and paint together on current pieces. Must provide own supplies.
Alzheimer's Support Group - This group meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Adult Day Care Center
Parkinson's Support Group - This group meets the 4th Friday of each month at 2:00 pm
Services
Congregate Meals - The Senior Center is a "nutrition site" and serves lunch 5 days per week at 11:30 am. Meals are designed to meet 1/3 of an adults daily nutrition. Meals are approved by a registered dietician. A donation based upon an individuals monthly income is strongly encouraged. Please call for a reservation or to receive a monthly menu
Recreation & Leisure - Various activities offering social interaction and satisfying use of time. Activities include crafts, bingo, movies, games, and more... Health Related - Activities providing information useful in living a healthy lifestyle. Activities include walking, sittercise, blood pressure screenings provided by Athens Regional Medical Center, nutrition education provided by UGA Department of Foods and Nutrition, and more...
Outreach - Direct assistance and referral to disadvantaged older adults
Friendly Visiting - volunteers provide social contacts to older adults isolated at home or attending the Senior Center
Tax Assistance - Volunteers from AARP provide assistance in filing tax returns for older adults from 9:00am - 1:00 pm every Tuesday from February1st through April 15th. Free
Senior Legal Assistance - Quarterly educational sessions on topics relating to senior issues provided by the Law Offices of Sherry Jackson. Call for scheduled dates and times
Transportation - Transportation to and from the Senior Center is available on a limited basis. A waiting list is maintained when space is not available.
Trips
The Senior Center works hard to provide a variety of exciting trips both locally as well as destinations that require overnight stays out of town. All of the trips offered by the Senior Center do have fees attached and are on a "first come, first serve" basis. The Senior Center makes every effort to make these trips as affordable as possible. Trips are offered on a monthly basis. Please call the Senior Center or refer to the most recent issue of ACCENT for details on upcoming trips.
General Guidelines for Senior Center Participation
Participants must be at least 55 or 60 years of age (depending on the program in which you wish to participate).
Participants of Congregate Meals, Outreach, Friendly Visiting, Health Related Services, or Transportation must be 60 years of age and a resident of Clarke County. All other programs or services are open to all area residents.
Participants must be able to ambulate independently, either with or without an assistive device or caregiver.
Participants must be continent of bowel and bladder or be able to manage incontinence independently.
Participants must follow all other rules and procedures listed in the Guidelines for Participation as well as the Senior Center Handbook.
The Athens-Clarke County Senior Center continues to develop partnerships within the community in order to create new opportunities as well as enhancing existing ones, so that the older adults of this community are better served with a variety of options for a fun and healthy life.
